It’s midday, and I’ve just woken up after a gruelling, emotional, jubilant and tearful night.
No, I’m not talking about the actual final, I’m talking about the after-show party Simon Cowell threw for us all at the Dorchester Hotel.
I finally stumbled into the streets at 4.30am, extremely drunk, extremely tired, but also extremely happy. Because we couldn’t have had a better finale to Britain’s Got Talent if we’d resurrected Elvis Presley.
It had everything, didn’t it? Drama, tension, excitement, and a shock result that must have split families and friends all over the country. When neither hot favourites Faryl Smith nor Escala made it to the final three, I’m sure a lot of people felt the same way as me…..how did THAT happen? But happen it did, and it just showed how incredibly competitive this year’s show was, and how talented the final line-up turned out to be. I had no complaints with the way the public vote, once I’d got over the surprise.
Andrew Johnston gave the performance of his life, and stuck it to those bullies who tormented him for years in the best possible way – with his stunning voice.
Signature stormed it with their fantastic Michael Jackson routine, and were thoroughly decent and humble in defeat.
As for George Sampson, what a story! As Simon rightly said, he is our Rocky and Billy Elliott all rolled into one.
Amanda and I didn’t think he was ready last year, and I stand by that decision because he wasn’t anything like as polished as he was this time round. But he just rolled his young sleeves up, practised for hours every day on the streets, and came back again determined to prove us wrong.
We all thought he might sneak the public vote after his semi-final performance on Wednesday night. His Singing In The Rain routine got the biggest reaction of any act throughout the week. And everyone was incredibly moved by the sheer determination in this young man’s face.
I saw George immediately after last night’s show ended, and he was still in shock.
‘What is the first thing thing you’re going to do with the money?’ asked Simon.‘I’m going to pay off my mum’s mortgage,’ he replied instantly. That’s why Britain fell in love with George Sampson. He’s a fighter with a heart.
P.S. Ratings for the final peaked at an astonishing 14.4 million – making Britain’s Got Talent the biggest entertainment TV show of the CENTURY. Which will, of course, be deeply depressing to my all my old TV critic friends who have spent the last two months calling me a fat, talentless, simpering goon. Sorry guys, but that’s showbiz…..
