Amanda's viewpoint: Semi 5 - Britain's Got Talent - Story

Amanda's viewpoint: Semi 530 May 09

Amanda

Last night, Amanda Holden sat in her dressing room after the final curtain fell and wrote down her emotions...We've thoughts on Hollie, and more...

What an incredible night

It all started so marvellously, with the Bears camping their way through the opening of the show!! Just a perfect start for me!! Good Evans. Very sweet, sincere performance not as great as it should have been but good enough!  I also really enjoyed the glamour and good old fashioned showbiz va-voom of the DCD dancers.

You know, Martin the guitarist was somebody I almost expected to buzz this evening. I really had started to worry if he honestly deserved a place in the final but I found myself strangely drawn to him and actually ended up thinking his guitar playing had improved immensely!! I especially liked his home-made light-up guitar!

Greg Pritchard, I'd thought, was a one trick pony - and also I worried whether the second time around it would be considered a freak show - but I have to say I really loved his performance. He was much stronger than I thought and I also, for the first time, saw his self-effacing charm!! A shame he didn't go through but a performance that despite the wobbles, he should be proud of!

Now, Aidan. What can I say? He is the next Justin Timberlake. The moves he has come up with, with absolutely no coaching, are incredible. Practicing all by himself in his bedroom with not even his parents realised they had a little genius for a son. To top it all he is confident, cheeky and gorgeous-looking!!! Another little hero like George!! The special effects in his act tonight really made his routine gloriously entertaining and his sure-fire win was much deserved!!

And obviously the talk of the night is nerves of Steel - Hollie Steele!! In my whole life I don't think I have ever seen such a courageous performance.

I have been lucky enough to perform in the West End and I will never forget the terror I felt on the first night. Every performer will experience that little 'devil' voice in their head that says "You're going to go wrong; you're going to forget the words..." God only knows but somehow we always overcome those excruciating nerves and go on with the show!!

I truly don't believe many performers on Broadway or the West End would have had the guts to continue or ask for a second chance after going through what Hollie went through tonight. I myself would have run to the hills and re-invented myself as an accountant!!! Well done, little thing!! You did good!!

I am utterly drained and said to Simon this evening that if this were a movie everyone would say it was ridiculous and not at all true to life!

Tomorrow is the final!! I'm excited but dying inside that the flame of Britain's Got Talent is about to burn out for another year......

I've now seen the Final but wanted to add a 'Hollie' comment anyway. She did sing beautifully but once you get to the semi-final you have to be treated the same, regardless of age. Giving her a second chance and then putting her through was totally unfair on Greg Pritchard. His voice is fantastic and unique and he didn't break down despite a few hiccups. Imagine if Holly had done that at the Royal Variety...Being brave and 10 wouldn't make it less of a disaster!

I have looked at a few of the comments and see that you have being getting alot of chritisisium from other writters about Hollie l saying that the judges should not have giving another chance.do not agree with them. I think that it wasvery gratefull of you to comfort and give her another chance. Peple just don't understand that you have a heart and was doing a good thing for a young inisant child. I no that if she got a chance everyone should of got a 2nd chance but ye only did wat waz best

Sorry - in my comment jusd posted I put 'BTG' instead of 'BGT' but I am 'crying' so I hope you will give me this 2nd chance !!!!!!!!!!

I am disgusted with the judges for giving Hollie another chance - she whined and grizzled as soon as her mother suggested giving her another chance - it looked so 'staged' to anyone watching - she has obviously never been told 'NO' and always gets her own way ! Apart from that I think she had a very 'screechy' singing voice. Maybe next year you should consider a junior BTG.

Amanda, if you want to see children from the age of about 7 sing well and in a true "professional" manner you would be enthralled with the annual Urdd Eisteddfod .Not just singing, but other musical competitions , dancing and recitation. The standard is very high indeed I can guarantee you would need plenty of tissues....the kids are all superb.(You can still watch this on S4C's website!)

kessi, no it doesn't, but it does mean she robbed someone who DIDN'T blow it the chance to win that £100,000 and that's what makes the whole thing stink. Lovely wee girl and all but I didn't watch her this evening because she had no business being there.

If you can not treat children, in a 100.000 pound contest, the same way as adult contestants: consider a Britain’s got talent junior edition. You three judges turned Britain’s got talent in a fake contest. Who-ever wins the final this Saturday, wins the biggest joke on television.
