Piers Morgan blog - live show 429 May 09

Piers Morgan

‘This is like a soap opera,’ said Simon, shaking his head in disbelief before the show last night.

He’d just heard that all the papers were doing yet more front page stories on Susan Boyle, and admitted to me: ‘I have never known anything like this in my whole career. It’s crazy.’

To be involved in a show that is being watched, analysed, commented on, and lambasted by people all over the world is a strange, slightly unsettling experience.

And that’s just for we judges, who are all very used to the media game after more than 75 years experience between us in the business.

So God knows how poor Susan is feeling (and the rest of the final contestants for that matter, too).

The level of attention they’re getting is just unbelievable.

And these aren’t professionals, they are amateurs who nobody had ever heard of a few weeks ago.

But we’re nearly at the end now, with just one day to go until the Final.

And what a final it’s going to be!

Everyone has always assumed it’s going to be a one-horse race since Susan captured the public imagination with that stunning audition performance seven weeks ago.

But anything can happen on a live show, and it will be fascinating to see how they all react to the incredible pressure pouring on their heads.

I loved last night’s show. It was funny, warm, moving and hilarious.

Julian Smith is a stunning saxophone player, and has a real chance to cause a shock tomorrow night. He’s cool, good-looking, humble, and has a fantastic natural talent – a lethal cocktail.

And I was thrilled to see 2 Grand get there too. There was barely a dry eye in the studio when they sang. Such lovely, genuine people, and they sing so beautifully together.

As for all the furore surrounding Susan, my bet is that she will respond with the performance of her life at the Final. This is one tough lady who has had to fight since the day she born, and there is no way she’s going to quit now as some of the papers seem to be suggesting, trust me.

The sheer level of abuse she’s getting continues to shock and appall me. Only yesterday, Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood said she ‘sings as bad as she looks.’ He called her ‘awful’, and said he ‘wanted to smash the TV’ after her semi-final.

What a disgusting thing to say.

Perhaps he’s just sore that his own dream of having any kind of career in America has never reached first base as they say in baseball.

Either way, pick on someone your own size Horwood -  like me, if you’ve got the guts.

Susan’s going to be a major star whatever happens tomorrow. And I for one hope she absolutely nails it on the night, and shoves all these vile critics’ disgraceful attacks down their throats.

Will she win?

In many ways, Susan Boyle’s already won.

Piers, I'm very late getting to your blog, but I just want to say thank you for standing up to all the mud-slingers who are trying to bury Susan - my guess is that you, Amanda and Simon are also on their hitlists. Your point about these contestants all being amateurs is vital. And your challenge to take on someone (his) own size is totally relevant.

I was expecting Susan Boyle will win for she is the best choice to sing for the Queen! I was sad and in tears that she didn't make it but don't lose hope Susan, this is just the beginning of your success. God has a purpose and we know HE will give you more than this. I watch Susan's video in you tube many times and I always cry. Her voice is like an angel that touches my heart and she has become my inspiration. Keep smiling and head up Susan!:)

Susan Boyle certainly brought the world to BGT. The View (Woopie) brought her to my attention. I have watched her sing the first song so many times. Diversity was great to watch as well and hope they are able to carry on with their future in dancing. I hope to hear more from Susan and wish her all the best. Also hope the reporters can give her a break. Thanks to Susan this girl from Vancouver Island BC will be back to watch next season. take care of her BGT

To Susan Boyle- Hats Off!! I know from listening to people in public talking, you have a wide fan base here in the States, and honey, you're just gettin' started. BGT was just the beginning of a very wild rollercoaster ride. When you're cd's hit the shelves, the ride will get even better for you. I wish you the best of luck and may Gods' angels watch over you every step of the way dear lady.

Susan, there is always going to be people out there that have bad things to say about everything. This I have to say to them (Talent beats ignorance everytime) You are awesome! don't let them get you down, hang in there.

Susan has made millions a bit more human. When she walks onto a stage the whole building lights up. The only other performer I have seen with such a luminous quality is Louis Armstrong. He was like that. These are people who know pain and chose joy.

I agree with you wholeheartedly Piers, what an odious little man and he is supposed to be a professioanl too. The spectre of green eyes looms. I think, and no I do not think he would dare say this to anyone who is likely to slap him across his heavily made up face or his over-hairsprayed hair. litte pipsqueak.

first of all if susan won you she is way ahead of the others. she has great talent and won the first night - there is no stopping her ...i saw your heart fall into place after the first stanza and i wish her well. also advise her that the answer for we perfectly beautiful people who keep shooting ourselves in the foot as a security blanket is to buy bullet proof shoes.....i have 8 pair......cheers

Sorry that Susan didn't win, she certainly deserve to. She has an amazing voice and appears to be a very caring and loving person. I agree with others, that she had already won, you first audition did it all. I was clued to my computer, looking and searching for information about susan, listening to her sing over and over again. Hoping to find more from her, Cry me a River, brought tears to my eyes. Now I am waiting patiently for her first CD. Will be a fan forever.
