Britain’s Got More Talent viewers saw the somewhat-lacking-in-stage presence Eugene display his talent for poetry for those pesky, hard-to-please judges.
But beneath librarian Eugene’s bookish exterior is one Adam Gitlin, who was hoping that his way with words would somehow win out.
37 year-old Adam, from Plymouth, explained, “A couple of years ago I made a New Years’ resolution to perform on poetry on Britain’s Got Talent”.
“I’ve been writing poems since I was a nipper and I wanted to do something with it – so here I am”.
“But I’ve only performed on stage twice before, in comedy clubs”.
“And as my BGT performance has come closer I’ve become more and more nervous”.
In the end, mind-mannered Adam took to the stage as his alter-ego in Cardiff. He told us, “Eugene is my comedy concoction”.
“He’s not overly exciting and doesn’t get out much”!
In character, Eugene told the cameras, "I don't think the judges are big fans of poetry but I feel I have the character and the charisma to win them around".
And win them around he did - gaining grins aplenty from the judges and a standing ovation from the impressed crowd.
Simon told him, "It was the first time anyone like you has ever had a standing ovation so that was pretty remarkable".
With three 'yes' votes Eugene went though to the next round - leaving Adam delighted that his daring showbiz plan had worked.
He told us, “I was always a bit worried the judges wouldn’t realise I was in character! I have be Eugene the whole time I'm on stage. I don’t think it would’ve been credible if I’d taken time out to put on the thick glasses and wrestle the fake teeth in!”
