Air-O-Smith get strung out

Guitar band Air-O-Smith were living it up - but going down at the Cardiff auditions.

Yep, it’s possible they’ve got the looks. There’s no denying they’ve got the moves. And they’ve certainly got the youthful enthusiasm needed for a 21st century rock band. All they seem to be missing are the instruments… but for a band like Air-O-Smith, therein lies the fun!

The three pals Dan 16, Steve 18, and Tim, 15, met last summer at a holiday camp. They decided to form what they hope, will one day become, the world’s greatest air-band!

We caught up with the three wannabe rockers shortly after the Cardiff audition to find out what you need to make a truly great air-band.

“First of all we don’t like the term air-band.,” explains Dan: “Yes we play air-guitars, air-drums, air-keyboards, and air-vocals… but we’re not an air band – we describe ourselves as musical parody.”

“We don’t take ourselves too seriously,” continues Tim: “There is always a lot of humour when we perform, we like to make fun of the rock and roll cliché… we’re like a younger version of Spinal Tap!”

The great thing about Air-O-Smith though, is that all three of its members are accomplished musicians in their own right! Tim is Grade 6 on the drums, Steve is Grade 6 on the bass, and Dan is a Grade 6 on the guitar!

“It always sounds a lot better when we perform without our instruments!” Steve jokes: “But because we know what chords should be played when, we can move our fingers to the correct imaginary place, which adds a lovely touch of realism to our sets!”

Even Piers Morgan, a fountain of knowledge for all things music, enjoyed their act – he was so thrilled by the boys’ musical parody that he jumped up onstage and ‘rocked-out’ with them!

“We love what we do, we have loads of fun doing it, and this is only the beginning for us,” states Dan whilst trying to hide a smirk: “In five years we’ll be air-guitar superstars.”

Remember folks you saw them air first!
