Handsome Britain’s Got Talent hopeful Shaun Smith has revealed that his early musical ambitions were formed when his mum worked for record company BMG.
If fact, in weird twist of fate, Shaun’s mum Sue worked in the same building as a certain Simon Cowell, Esq..
But Shaun is quick to point out that the record company connection won him no favours on Britain’s biggest talent show.
He told us, “They didn’t know each other. They might have spoken on the phone once – but it was only for him to say, “Can I record a fault please? My answering machine is broken…”
Shaun revealed that his mum Sue Smith worked as an IT technician at the company, until she left around 2001.
“She was head of the IT department,’ explained Shaun, so she didn’t work in music, as such”.
But as a toddler, Shaun loved his days in the office, which was frequented by big musical stars.
He laughed, “To be honest, at two or three, I wouldn’t have noticed”!
“I remember my mum humming along to songs and me doing really bad Elvis impressions as a kid”.
“All I really knew was that my mum worked with computers. It wasn’t until later that it was a record company and she could get free tickets for things – she never took me, mind”!
“But I loved going into the office. I got to play lots of games on the computer!”
Since his early Elvis impressions, Shaun’s singing has improved quite a lot, and he already has a local talent show title to his name.
“He explained, “I won a competition called Staffordshire Popstars in 2006 which gave me the chance to make a little demo CD to give to pubs and clubs, to get work”.
“I was too young to make the most of it then. But everyone has always said I have a really amazing deep voice for singing”.
“It sounded a bit strange when I was younger – but hopefully I’ve grown into it since then!”
