Flattery, it appears, will get you everywhere… at least that seems to be the case where Simon Cowell is concerned.
Historically, performance poets have always taken on bit of a battering on the Britain’s Got Talent stage. Usually all Simon has to do is look at a poet before his hand slams down on the buzzer.
But, there was something about Hilary Walker’s poem that kept him captivated… the subject matter! For 52 year-old Hilary enjoyed a buzz-free couple of minutes reciting a poem all about her lust for Simon, and unsurprisingly, Mr Nasty seemed to love it!
We caught up with the Bolton-based registrar after her successful audition to find out a bit more about her passion for poetry and for Simon…
“I’m so pleased it’s over and I’m over the moon got through! I’ve been getting really nervous; I’ve had a dry mouth all day – no matter how much water I’ve had. I’m just thrilled to have survived the buzzers.”
Hilary started writing poetry about three years ago and quickly found that she enjoyed performing her poems just as much as she did writing them.
“I was really surprised that I found the performance side of it so much fun, so I joined a spoken word performance group and I haven’t looked back!
“I began to write more and more comedy because it seemed to come naturally to me. I find it easy to write humorous poems and I think people enjoy listening to them.”
Hilary decided to write the poem about Simon because a number of women she knows find him “extremely attractive.” Although Hilary doesn’t count herself amongst their number, she does think writing about him was a shrewd move.
“I thought that the only way to get through my audition was to write a steamy poem about Simon – it was a bit of a risk but I’m really happy it’s paid off.
“In an ideal world I would make my living through my poetry - that would be fantastic! It’s been a long time since Pam Ayers so maybe I can fill her shoes!”
Keep writing poems about how gorgeous Simon is and you might just get your wish… although we’re not to sure how fellow judges Piers and Amanda would take it!
